The measurement for the magnetic saturation of Cobalt binder phase in tungsten carbide industry is widely taken to evaluate the tungsten carbide products’ composition
The cobalt is magnetic ,but the T.C crystal and other cubic carbide crystals such as Tic ,NbC,TaC and VC etc are non-magnetic. Consequently, if the cobalt’s magnetic saturation is measured in a grade ,and then to compare with value tested from the pure cobalt sample ,we can get the cobalt binder phase’s alloy level ,as the elements which form the alloy with cobalt influence the value of magnetic saturation.
Therefore, we can measure any changes on the binder phase in optimal conditionl ,this test is used to determine the deviation of optimal carbon content in a grade ,because the carbon takes very important role in composition control .
Low magnetic saturation value indicates a low carbon content or η phase existing
High magnetic saturation value indicates the existing of carbon or graphite phase
The above two results are adverse to the tungsten carbide products’ mechanical performance.
