Transverse Rupture Strength and Toughness Different Between Category K and P Tungsten Carbide Materials
The T.R.S with normal tungsten carbide material is 0.90~1.50Gpa,meanwhile,it increases over rising of binder phase content. However,if the binder phase is the same, category P (WC-TiC-Co) carbide materials' T.R.S is always lower than the K ones(WC-Co),in the meantime,it reduces with increase of TiC content.
As tungsten carbide materials are fragile, its impact toughness is only 1/8~1/30 of high speed steels in the normal temperature,so the toughness is a weakness of tungsten carbide materials, actually this is way the tungsten carbide cutting tools or inserts are welded or clamped on the tool holders, only the small modulus gear hobs, tungsten carbide drills or endmills are made solidarily. In addtion,it is same as the T.R.S,the category P tungsten carbides' toughness is lower than the K ones
