The Difference Between Ceramic and Tungsten Carbide Materials
Comparing to the tungsten carbide cutting tools, the ceramic ones are available to bear 2000℃ high temperature, but the tungsten carbide ones would be softened at 800℃,making the ceramic tools with high-temperature chemical stability and capable to take high-speed machining work, however they also have disadvantages such as low toughness and transverse rupture strength, resulted in fragibility. In the meantime, with the development of Boron Nitride ceramic,it is mainly used for turning, milling and boring very hard materials.Meanwhile,as the hardness of BN cutting tools is much higher than the normal cermaic ones, which is even equal to that of diamond's and both of them are called super-hard materials,it is taken to machine the workpiece with hardness above HRC48.
The Boron Nitride material has good high-temperature hardness,as high as 2000℃,although it is more fragile than the tungsten carbide material, its anti-shocking and fragibility-resistance perfomrance is much better than the Alumina.Furthermore, some special-preparation BN cutting tools are capable to resist chip loading with big margins in rough machining process and bear the shocking strength in interrupted machining as well as wearing and cutting heat in finish machining process, all the features make Boron Nitride cutting tools capable to rough machining hardened steel and high hardness casting irons etc hard-to-be-machined workpieces.
