The Trends of Coating for Tungsten Carbide Cutting Tools

At present ,tungsten carbide coating grade has developed with two contrary directions .On the one hand, the general coating grade is applied more and more widely, and its versatility is more and more strong .On the other hand, the special grade is more and more suitable to the workpiece and machining condition ,so as to achieve the aim of high working efficiency .Such as the KU series grades like KU10T,KU25T,KU30T introduced by Kennametal ,it has very widespread application, in which the grade KU10T and KU25T take the tungsten carbide substrate with high toughness and wear-resistance performance coupled with high Aluminum content of TiN+TiAlN PVD coating .The new KU series grade is widely used in turning,boring,groove-making,parting and screw-machining of steel ,stainless steel, cast iron, on-titanium alloy ,high-temperature alloy and hardened materials.; meanwhile KU30T grade taking cobalt-rich gradient tungsten carbide substrate with excellent toughness ,coupled with TiN+TiCN+TiN composited CVD coating. Kennametal newly introduced grade KC5510 and KC5525 are designed specially for machining high-temperature alloy with high working efficiency, the fining grain and high cobalt content tungsten carbide substrate, coupled with high performance TiAlN PVD coating ,making the cutting tools with very good hot deformation resistance .and improve 2 times cutting speed comparing with common PVD coating tools .The CVD coating grade as T6000 series(T6020,T6030) of Tungaloy in Japan were designed specially for turning stainless steel. The coating as DO-TEC of ISCAR was designed uniquely for high-speed milling gray cast iron and nodular cast iron, taking Al2O3 MT CVD and TiALN PVD composited coating technique, with very high wear-resistance and anti-flaking performance.
