What is dry cutting?
In the traditional cutting field, cutting fluid plays very important role in wet cutting process ,but also some drawbacks existing .For instance ,a lot of funds spent to maintain a big cutting fluid supply system, also have to add preservative and replace cutting fluid regularly ,thus ,much surcharge increased ,which takes 15%~17% of the total cost ,however ,the cutting inserts only occupy 2%~5% in the whole cost .In addition ,the harmful substance of the fluid is hazard to workers’ heath and cause environment pollution too. Consequently ,the using of the cutting fluid brings more and more problems ,so the dry cutting is better than the wet cutting in this respect .
The application of dry cutting requires much better performance of the cutting inserts ,such as its red-hardness and wear-resistance, at present ,the cutting inserts’ materials like new tungsten carbide,ceramic,CBN and PCBN are capable to achieve this requirement and use in the dry cutting process. On the other hand ,the modern cutting materials are more suitable for the dry cutting when they are undertaken high-speed machining. For example ,the CBN and advanced tungsten carbide materials ,especially the cutting tools coated as protection is more efficiency and longer service life in dry cutting process under high-speed ,and high-temperature situation.
