Use of Recycled Tungsten Carbide in Snowplow Blade Edges
Usually the tungsten carbide material of the snowplow tungsten carbide tipped blades are described as “virgin quality”.Actually the claim does not state the material used in the snowplow blade is virgin,but has the quality of virgin material.The truth is : you are either a virgin or not a virgin.In this case,the material claimed as “virgin quality” in probably not virgin 100%.In most considerations,only a metallurgical expert can determine a material is or is not pure virgin tungsten carbide crystal structure.Using a photo spectrometer,trace elements can appear in tungsten carbide that indicate the pure tungsten carbide material does not contain 100%(WC) crystal molecules,but may have titanium carbide(TiC),tantalum carbide(TaC),chromium carbide(CrC2) or other metal carbides in the structure.This would be a clear indication there is scrap cutting tool insert tungsten carbide crystals present.TiC,TaC,CrC2 and NbC are carbide alloyed with cutting tool inserts to prevent common failure mechanisms when machine steel alloys.Scrap cutting tool carbides can contaminate and compromise the value of wear property of pure tungsten carbides(WC). |
